Esto Maxibasketball (eng)


The history of Estonian senior basketball dates back to 1980ies, when the Estonian team competed in Jānis Kūmiņš Cup organized between the Baltic Countries; Estonian –Finnish international match and at the beginning of 90ies, Estonian Championship got its start. Estonians have participated in World Masters Games as of 1989, where Estonian women (40+) won a gold medal and men (45+) won a silver medal.

In 1991 International Maxibasketball Federation FIMBA was founded in Buenos Aires and Estonia was one of the eight founding members (representatives Mr. Aadu Kana and Mr. Valdu Suurkask). In Buenos Aires, Estonian women won a gold medal and men got silver.

Since then Estonian teams have been represented in different age categories in almost all FIMBA Maxibasketball championships and in five World Masters Games. In different age categories men and women have altogether won 29 medals.

Mr. Priit Tomson, who has won big World Basketball Championship twice and Mrs. Sirje Kikas have been recognized as best maxibasketball players in FIMBA in their age group. In Estonia 25 teams take part in Maxibasketball Championship.

Esto Maxibasket was founded to coordinate senior basketball and maxibasket activities. Esto Maxibasket is a member of Estonian Basketball Association and represents Estonia in FIMBA.
All these years Mr. Aadu Kana has been in charge of Estonian maxibasket organization (countryman).
