Within the Italian Representative Teams, that competed for international maxibasket torunaments all over the world, Giuseppe Ponzoni (photo), 51 years old, has been the key player in the last 4 years. His presence was decisive for the success of the Italian Team. One gold medal won in the Euroepan Championship 2006, one silver medal in the World Champions League 2007. He combined his tasks of trainer with those of player, a double success.
Player and trainer, but this is not enough: he also acts as sport manager, selector, organizing.
Thanks to the activities carried out, and not only on sports ground, in August 2007 in Portorico he has been given the “Eduardo Award”, the greatest Fimba honour, that confers upon him the MVP title and the one of Maxibasket Ambassador.
Organizing events and tournaments is part of his work, apart from his sport activity.
Till 3 years ago the Italian Basket Federation had never thought to take part in maxibasket category competitions. After his first participations to Fimba tournaments, Ponzoni convinced the Federation that the moment was arrived to organize an Italian Championship. This was the way the first two italian maxibasket competitions were born, also managed by Ponzoni.
In Italy, it is not easy to organize Maxibasket, because this typically is an amateur activity. Unlike East Europe countries or Latin America, in Italy the top basket has a definitely professional character. In spite of this, Ponzoni succeded to awaken the Italian Basket Federation, that created in its field a Master Amateur Area, of which Ponzoni is one of the manager, together with Alberto Paccapelo and Renato Villalta.
16 teams for Final Games - In the first edition of the italian maxibasket championship, the Cremona – Brescia Team won the competition; in the second won the Udine line-up. In both occasions the final stage was played in Pesaro at the beginning of June, between 16 teams divided into qualifying rounds. Qualifying rounds take place in those Italian regions where maxibasket activity is more widespread. The first 2 classified teams compete for the final games.
More attention by media - In 2008 the final stage of the Italian Championship will be played in Rimini. It is likely that this time more teams than in the past will be involved in the competition. Two are the reasons why: always more over 40 players are devoting to maxibasket; mass-media are beginning to focus more and more attention to the maxibasket phenomenon, which is capturing spaces on newspapers, magazines, internet sites, radio and TV.
From Italy to Europe – The Italian Championship has become an important reference point for over 40 teams of the national territory. The success of this event has represented the trial for next Maxibasket European Championship, the organization of which was assigned to Ponzoni, the Italian Fimba Delegate. The venue of the tournament will be Pesaro again (from July 25th – August 2nd, 2008), the town in Italy where passion for basket is stronger.
This is a fundamental occasion to definitively launch maxibasket in Italy on a large scale and in the frame of such an important event. Moreover, as the National Basket Team over 45 is playing all over Italy a tournament of 10 games (from November 2007 to May 2008) versus different kind of team players such as artists, old national and international stars, etc, several Italian towns have already requested to organize the event.
